September 22—First Day of Fall. The Sun crosses the celestial equator, heading south. This is known as the autumnal equinox and marks the beginning of the fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern. September 22 is known as the astronomical fall whereas September 1 is known as the meteorological fall. Which meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle.
Fall astronomical season – the Earth’s tilt is moving away from its maximum lean toward the Sun; its rays are aiming directly at the equator.
Fall meteorological season – Begins September 1 (September, October, November); ends November 30
