    1. Thank you, Indira. The fifth in plead the fifth comes from the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which, among other rights, protects citizens from self-incrimination. In other words, when one doesn’t want to answer a question and wants to remain silent, he/she pleads the fifth. It’s commonly used as slang,
